This week my husband scored his company tickets to the Texans/Panthers game. This was a cause of great excitement in our house, because the starting quarterback for the Panthers is none other than Cam Newton. The very same Cam Newton that led our beloved Auburn Tigers to a perfect season, that included a National Championship win!!!!
The only problem is that there were only 4 tickets, meaning one of our little guys had to stay home with me. Our youngest, got to go to the last game, so it was his turn to stay behind. I was determined to make it a fun day for just the two of us, so that he wouldn't be disappointed!!!
I asked him if he wanted to go to lunch and then the movies... He answered "No ma'am."... I asked him if he wanted to go here? go there? do this? do that? and every question was met with a simple "No ma'am".
I was discouraged, I wanted him to have a fun and special day too... And then I had a thought. I asked him if he wanted to get pizza, and then wanted to play Xbox 360 while I watched. Not only did he answer with a resounding "YES MA'AM!!!", he started jumping up and down in excitement!!!!
I'll be honest, sitting upstairs in the man cave, cheering on a video game is not exactly my first choice of activity for a Sunday afternoon. However my little guy loves his video games, and what he loves even more, is when someone sits with him and shows an interest, cheers him on, and gives him the occasional High 5!!!
So instead of running all over town in search of entertainment, I find myself sitting in my den, with my little guy, doing exactly what makes him the happiest!!
If that doesn't speak volumes about what is truly important this holiday season then I don't know what does!!!! Maybe instead of running all over town and wracking our brains trying to figure out what we think someone else would want for Christmas, maybe we should stop and think about what really makes them happy. It could be as simple as sitting with them, bringing their favorite food, and encouraging them!!!!
Now if you will excuse me, I need to go back to watching my son play. He's about to beat the next level... Oh wait , I stand corrected, the next stage!!!! Have a wonderful Sunday everyone!!!!
Yes, sometimes we forget to think that what people really want is us, our time, undivided attention and love. I'm sure your son will remember this time with you.
Happy New Year,
Kathryn
